Rosie

An underweight Hedgehog with bad ringworm and mite infestation

Rosie was found in March 2003, having woken from hibernation, very underweight, thin, dehydrated and covered in sores and scabs. She was found trying to eat old discarded fish and chips. After examination she was found to be quite an old hedgehog with worn teeth and a mouth infection. She has ringworm and a mite infestation. She is being treated at first with Tea Tree cream to soften the scabs, then as she gets stronger will be bathed with imavoral to kill the ringworm fungal infection.

As treatment has progressed, she has lost most of the spines on her body and almost all of her hair from the flanks and face. We hope that soon both the spines and hair will regrow. Until then she is being kept in a warm room at a constant temperature of 20º/21ºC and given a highly nutritious special diet with added vitamins and minerals to build her up and help her overcome the fungal infection and general debility.

Update: Rosie recovered fairly well and grew new spines and spent a peaceful few months in the hedgehog garden. She went into hibernation in November 2003 and woke up in April 2004, but unfortunately she was just too old & infirm to continue and died in May 2004
